Backtrack is based on Slax which can be used to generate wide variety of attaccks in a network,finding vulnerabilities in machines.The utilities given can be used to capture the packets using sniffers.Then there are penetration utilities given,discovery tools are given.Its a really good OS which gives all the security tools in a bundle.

The fun is that you can download a live cd iso and use it to test your own network to check against penetrations and many other things.
